OUTSIDERS' INTEREST
Military-industrial courier. October 17—23, 2007. By Ilya Kedrov
The latest volume of the Encyclopedia "Russia's Arms and Technologies. The XXI
Century Encyclopedia" is not just full of information — all the books of this
series are notable for such a property. But the Volume could be quite interesting
for outsiders bearing no relation to law-enforcement bodies. The interest in
arms — colds and fires, — proper to all men, can be satisfied without applying
big effort because there are plenty of books in bookstores and resources in
the Internet dedicated to these dangerous toys. But there is significantly less
information about equipment for policemen. At the same time, the detective genre
is one of the most popular in literature, cinema and TV. And practically everybody
would like to know what is inside the case of a criminalistic expert.
The Volume "Security and law enforcement facilities" is plentiful of such information.
Do you want to know what is included into the "Sirius" field equipment set,
designed for evaluating the extent of thermal affection of articles made of
most common materials and found on a fireplace, in order to obtain trustworthy
information about location of fire centers and preliminarily reveal the cause
of the fire? No problem, everything is described in detail. As the result, you
will better understand what information was used when a fire emergency representative
declares: "According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by arson",
— in his interview to a newsman.
Or consider, for example, the "Delta" portable fingerprint set designed for crime detection and investigation specialists working at place of occurrence. I do not want you to give a try of the dactylographic pad, but it is curiously enough to look from outside.
The modern equipment should help police and Interior Ministry troops in protecting
citizens against criminal occurrences — from riotous behavior of football hooligans
to cybercrime. The book contains 45 sections covering various types of special
and military equipment, control and observation facilities, armor and active
defense. A separate chapter describes the armament and equipment used by Interior
Ministry troops. The models described in the book are illustrative of current
and future standards for equipment and armament based on science-intensive and
high technologies to be used by law-enforcement bodies.
All materials of the Volume have been prepared by specialists of the Russian Interior Ministry and defense industry. The 15-th volume of the Encyclopedia contains descriptions and parameters of 850 models including 510 models of police equipment, and 340 military models which include munitions, communication facilities, management systems and other equipment. According to the tradition, the last section contains information about main defense industry enterprises and organizations working also for the Russian Interior Ministry.
