AIMING AT HIGH TECHNOLOGIES

Military-industrial courier. October 05-11, 2005. By Ilya Kedrov

The eleventh volume of the twenty-volume Encyclopedia "Russia's Arms and Technologies", as it can be seen from its title, is dedicated to modern military optical equipment and laser technologies. At the present time they comprise the most important information component of modern armament systems and military equipment.

The book covers a wide range of optical and optoelectronic instruments for reconnaissance and observation; sights and sighting systems for firearms; optoelectronic systems for weapons control and guidance; laser and optical devices for armament systems and space monitoring; equipment for trajectory measurement; and other facilities for information acquisition and processing. Besides final products of Russian defense enterprises working in the sphere of optoelectronic systems, the 11-th volume of the Encyclopedia contains information about manufacture of optical materials and development of optical glass production in Russia.

The book systematically covers achievements of scientific-industrial associations and organizations in designing lasers and laser technologies including high-power lasers and systems based on these lasers. In particular, the section "Laser and information technologies" describes designs of the Scientific-Industrial Association "Almaz" named after Academician A. A. Raspletin (which is a part of the Concern "Almaz-Antey"). These include the LSPE, a laser system for energy transmission, which generates laser emission, creates a narrow beam and focuses it onto a specified part of a remote object; the MLTK-50, a mobile technological system generating laser emission and pointing the beam; as well as measurement facilities for testing the LSPE. It should be noted here that the Scientific-Industrial Association "Almaz" has acquired an ample experience creating powerful laser systems during the last thirty years. And there were specialists of the "Almaz" company who have obtained a positive result when they pointed a high-power laser beam onto an aerodynamic target in 1982.

A separate section contains information about optical methods used in studying sea water, and about applications of information and optical technologies in hydrooptics. In particular, the book describes such devices as shadow instruments for studying optical anomalies in oceans, and infrared equipment for studying thermal fields on oceanic surface.

The final chapter of the book contains brief information about enterprises and organizations designing and manufacturing optical and laser equipment in Russia, Byelorussia and Ukraine; scientific and research centers (grounds) for developing and testing optoelectronic and laser systems; as well as institutes for education and training specialists. It should be noted that the 11-th volume presents materials in a peculiar manner. The header of every article describing an optoelectronic device contains now a name of the company-manufacturer. This significantly simplifies the navigation within the book.
