AN ENCYCLOPEDIC REFERENCE BOOK ABOUT NAVAL WEAPONS HAS BEEN PUBLISHED
ITAR-TASS. August 24, 2001. Washington. By Andrei Shitov
An encyclopedic reference book about naval weapons has been published. It is the third volume of the scientific and technical series "Russia's Arms and Technologies. The XXI century Encyclopedia" being published under general supervision of the Defense Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ivanov.
The exclusive right for international distribution of the book, containing text in both Russian and English, belongs to the American company "Tommax".
Its president Thomas Langan said to the ITAR-TASS correspondent that this volume attracts attention because it describes to western readers such weapon systems, for example, as missiles "Shkval" and "Moskit". In particular, the American citizen Edmond Pope, who tried to obtain information about "Shkval", was convicted in Russia of espionage and later obtained mercy from the President of the Russian Federation.
The newspaper "Washington Times" noticed in an article about the volume publication that, according to its information, the possibility of the US Navy to defend against these missiles is "quite restricted".
In general, according to Thomas Langan, the publication is addressed mainly to specialists of governmental, industrial and academic circles in the USA and other countries taking a professional interest in Russian arms. It is no coincidence that there are more than 1000 subscribers of the encyclopedia despite of its high price - $495 each volume. 65 percent of these subscribers are American institutions, organizations and companies. The total international edition counts 2000 copies.
The American distributor believes that there are no similar books in the world of such complete covering and trustworthy information obtained directly from Russian weapon manufacturers. Especially this Encyclopedia is useful to those who want to improve scientific, technical and trade relations with Russian defense enterprises.
First volumes of the Encyclopedia were dedicated to Russian strategic nuclear forces and rocket and artillery armament of ground forces. The fourth volume about space and missile systems, including air defense facilities, should be issued on October. By the end of the next year the subscribers should obtain in common 10 volumes providing complete presentation of present capabilities of Russian armourers.
Subscription conditions and publication plans are available on the web site of the company "Tommax".
