THEY HAVE TO REMEMBER!

Oil of Russia. May, 2005. Nikolai Lysukhin

Gaining victory in the Great Patriotic War became an epoch-making historical event, which will remain in human memory forever. 60 years passed since that great day, but, on the eve of 60-year anniversary of the Victory, every citizen of our country is eager to express his gratitude and admiration to the generation of victors. To people, whose courage and heroism on battlefields, and feat of labor on the home front became the constituents of the Great Victory. Authors and publishers of the book "The Sacred War 1941-1945", which has been issued on the eve of the great jubilee, dedicated their fundamental work to those people.

The history shows that events of the Great Patriotic War are not subject of time. The last volleys of the most cruel and bloody war in the human history became silent 60 years ago, but fire marks of this war can not be forgotten. They exist in veterans' scars, in memorials and obelisks, in ammunitions grubbed out, in archived documents turned yellow, in eyes of elderly people who have never seen their fathers. They exist in children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of victors. And every new generation of people entering their life, comprehending heroic and tragic pages of the past, renders homage to the great deed of their forefathers. The new book is addressed, first of all, to those young people.

The publication was sponsored by "LUKoil" company. The company's president stressed in his address to the readers: "I hope, the book "The Sacred War" will become a reliable source of information about the Great Patriotic War and contribute to patriotic education of citizens in our country".

The book contains a significant number of unique archive documents and photos, many of them became accessible to a wide audience for the first time. The comprehensive data the book is based on provide a wide-ranging view of the history of the Great Patriotic War, describe the feat of the people and their willingness to the service of the Homeland during the years of tribulation.

The feat of workers of labor fronts, including the oil industry, was not forgotten. A separate chapter titled "Battle for Oil" is dedicated to the self-sacrificing labor of those people. The chapter contains many interesting numbers and facts describing the titanic efforts made by our country in order to organize the uninterrupted fuel delivery to the front. The readers can learn about difficulties faced during the initial period when substantial oil reserves, created in western regions before the war, were lost and the railway transport system was almost paralyzed. The Soviet oil-industry workers were forced to destroy oil producing and refining facilities and hide the equipment before the face of the German 1st Tank Army approaching to Caucasus and having German petroleum engineers. Our forces did not allow them to penetrate to oil fields at Groznyy and Baku, and when the German troops were brushed aside, the Soviet oil-industry workers restored the oil production at full extent in shortest time. The front needed more and more oil every day: by 1945 our army consumed by half more oil than in 1942. The statistics gives evidence that it was oil that constituted one half of all material resources delivered to the front...

Of course, the story about the contribution of oil-industry workers into the victory over fascist Germany is only one page in heroic memorials of the Great Patriotic War. But this page reflects the courage, persistence and gallantry, - all the best merits the Soviet people showed during the hard and glorious years of the war.
