NEW VOLUMES AVAILABLE ON RUSSIAN
National Defense. August 2000. David LL. Silbergeld
With the end of the Cold War and a the creation of a new openness between East and West, pictures, diagrams and other information regarding military equipment – available in the past only through covert sources to intelligence agencies – now are available in catalogs and CD-ROMs.
Tommax, Inc., the publisher who gave us Russia's Arms Catalog and CD, has done it again. With volume number one – Strategic Nuclear Forces – we have the beginning of a great new series: Russia's Arms & Technology – XXI Century Encyclopedia.
We are given a preview of Russia's entire nuclear arsenal – all fire generations, with unprecedented coverage of the Russian Federation's nuclear complex. Contents of this 516-page encyclopedia include details, description, full-color photographs, diagrams, cut-aways and a myriad of technical specifications never seen beyond hitherto restricted intelligence documents.
Working directly with the endorsement of Igor Sergeyev, marshal and minister of defense of the Russian Federation, TommaX's Moscow publishing house, Arms & Technology, under the directorship of editor-in-chief, Nikolai Spassky, compiled, edited and prepared the monumental first edition of what will certainly be an outstanding series.
All of this comes beautifully bound in a quality edition, seldom seen in this day and age, where publishers are more concerned with cost that quality. Each page is presented in bilingual side-by-side format, English and Russian, a feature which should qualify it as an excellent Russian dictionary of modern technical terms.
This 510-page volume is divided into 10 sections, including an appendix. The page of each section are edge color-coded for easy reference and are preceded by an introduction from the commander-in chief of each service.
- "Land-based Strategic Nuclear Forces" includes guided ballistic missiles and missile complexes from Generation I through IV, command and control systems, and support facilities that include coverage of the scrapping programs for missiles. It comprises 120 pages.
- "Marine Strategic Nuclear Forces" (MSNF) includes a comprehensive submarine development chart detailing the different classes of ships. It consists of 57 pages.
- "Safe operations and Transportation of Nuclear Munitions" comprises 25 pages of related information.
- "Air-Based Strategic Nuclear Forces" contains full-color photos of
the TU-95M, Tu-22M3 bomber, and IL-78 cargo aircraft within 32 pages.
- "Topogeodetic Support" is a reference guide to satellite communications, satellite reconnaissance, and satellite mapping capabilities. This 32-page section has many cut-away drawings and artist renditions.
- A 51-page "Nuclear Research" section includes experimental physics isotope research that has photos of Russian atomic and hydrogen bombs and warheads. There is additional coverage of conventional weapons development centers.
- "Institute of Applied Physics" is a 47-page section covering the development of nuclear munitions.
- The "Research Institute of Automation" is a 30-page section.
- The appendix is made up of terms and definitions that include a helpful chart with NATO-coded missile designations, for those who can never remember the Russian system. There also is an English index table.
The cost of this impressive volume is $495 plus shipping and handling, and it is well worth the price, which is comparable to almost any volume of Jane's.
A new volume will be released every three to four months, each one focusing on new technical developments and modernization and upgrades to existing military equipment.
