PEOPLE OF DEEPS

Red Star. March 21, 2006. By Anatoly Dokuchaev

The Publishing House "Arms and Technologies" gave a handsome gift to Russian submariners, personnel of a large sector of the defence industry, and to all people taking interest in the naval history. It published the book "Russia's Submarine Forces. 1906 - 2006" by the Russian submarine forces centenary. The book is a real encyclopedia (containing 830 pages, hundreds of unique drawings, photos, schemes and tables) and, the author believes, there were no similar publications on the Russian book market.

Subscribers of the book receive compliments from Sergei Ivanov, the Defence Minister of the Russian Federation and a deputy chairman of the Russian government. "On March 19, 2006 we hold the 100-th anniversary of the Russian submarine forces, - he notes. Names of many submariners, whose feats are not only pieces of courage and heroism but also examples of high skill, moderation and mutual succour, are written by gold letters into Russian heroic annals. Russian people hallow labour achievements of those who, applying intellect, genius and experience, created unique submarines which, being on day, reliably protect sea borders of the homeland over a period of one century".

The book was published under general supervision of Admiral Vladimir Masorin, the Commander-in-Chief Navy. The editorial board and authors of the publication (several tens of people) coopted practically all navy elite of the country. The submarine forces are considered as a quite ample notion: it includes submarine combat formations, supply systems, enterprises and organizations of the defence industry, and, of course, crews whose hands keep the combat readiness of redoutable submarine ships. "The new book, - notes Nikolai Spassky, the General Director and Editor-in-Chief of the Publishing House "Arms and Technologies", - tells about first steps in submarine shipbuilding in Russia in XVIII-XIX centuries, about heroic history of Russian submarine forces in the XX century, about submariners life and duty, about the modern submarine fleet, the basis of our sea force, which combines lethal striking power with stealth and unlimited stay time in the sea".

It is known that Emperor Nikolai II ordered to declare that submarines are a separate category (class) of ships of the Russian Navy since March 19, 1906 when the submarines became threatening arms during sea wars. But the authors start their discourse from earlier times, at the beginning of the XVIII century, when the "Hidden Boat", - the first Russian submarine, was created by Yefim Nikonov. We have a chance to know the history of submarine creation as well as to see color pictures of the submarine, Peter I looking at the building work, and the diving dress designed by Yefim Nikonov. And every page of the history of our native submarine fleet is shown with the same concision and picturesque.

An incomplete list of well-illustrated articles covering origin of the Russian submarine fleet is as follows: "Underwater rocket carrier by K. A. Shilder", "Submarine by V. Bauer - the first foreign project in the Russian Navy", "Submarine by I. F. Alexandrovsky - the first boat with a mechanical mover", "S. K. Dzhevetsky and his submarines", "Projects which were not implemented", "Time is ripe for I. G. Bubnov", "Submarine "Dolphin" - the first native combat boat". We could understand how young was the Russian submarine fleet by looking at the picture "Submarine by I. F. Alexandrovsky" or at the series of pictures "Submarines built by I. G. Bubnov". There are many other pictures and good-quality photos including the photo of Emperor Nikolai II who set in life the new kind of fleet forces.

The section covering Russian submarine forces in the First World War is also very interesting. Probably, it is the first time when we get such a full coverage of our submarines fighting enemy in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. The salt is that there are photos of submarine crews, some of these photos are printed in two-page openings. By the way, submarine names such as "Shark", "Lamprey", etc. written on sailor hats should, according to the opinion of submarine forces organizers, instill in submariners a proud of their boat, a spirit of fellowship and mutual help.

Of course, this encyclopedic book demonstrates development of the USSR submarine fleet or, be more precise, its recreation in the 20th - 30th of the last century as well as unexampled heroism and courage of soviet submariners during the Great Patriotic War. It is appropriate to say here that a photograph of N. A. Lunin in the central command post of the submarine Sch-421 (probably, due to personal bias of the project leader Sergei Osinin) became a peculiar visit card of this book. Of course, the book contains the article "N. A. Lunin attacks the "Tirpitz" and other articles: "Submarines participate in the defense of Sevastopol", "Star cruise of A. I. Marinesko", etc.

Then materials follow about creation of oceanic atomic missile-carrying fleet: from first post-war oceanic boats to submarines of the last generation. We get knowledge about works of our remarkable scientists, designers and workers created masterpieces of submarine engineering. Due to their labor, the Russian Navy swept into the underwater space and obtained there, as note the book authors, its main sea power becoming a great underwater armada. There were no maritime nation having such submarine fleet as the Soviet Union had, - neither by number of boats, nor by underwater speed, nor by depth of submersion, nor by crew tolerance. Submarines became the main class of navy forces.

We can get knowledge about the present state and future prospects of submarine engineering from Rear Admiral A. F. Shlemov, the Chief of the Defence Ministry Directorate for ship orders and delivery, naval armament and equipment; Rear Admiral N. G. Kovalenko, the Chief of the Navy Directorate for shipbuilding, armament and its maintenance; Rear Admiral I. G. Zakharov, the Head of the 1st Central Scientific Research Institute of the Defence Ministry; and from other professionals. This section presents shipbuilding enterprises and industrial associations of the Russian defence industry, which directors tell about underwater odyssey of their companies, implementation of certain projects, creation of underwater oceanic giants and their capabilities. Obviously, publishers can not show trials of the Typhoon submarine "Dmitry Donskoy", launch of the new strategic ballistic missile "Bulava", and other new designs which have no counterparts in the world.

Specialists familiarize us with the management system and infrastructure of submarine forces, missile and torpedo armament for submarines, facilities for hydro-acoustic warfare countermeasures, submarine radio-electronics, and search and rescue facilities for submarines.

Both professionals and amateurs have a possibility to learn in detail the training of personnel for submarine fleet (organizations and higher education institutions), the military and technical collaboration with our partners in the sphere of submarine armament.

The section "Human factor as a basis for combat readiness" familiarizes us with traditions of our fleets and flotillas. Each article is based upon interesting historic materials. The section "Submariner is a heroic career" belongs to the same category. We can get knowledge about heroes of sea deeps, submarines on pedestals, public organizations of submarine officers, submarine museums, etc.
