14 VOLUMES - ALL ABOUT ARMS
Red Star. September 14, 2001. By Anatoly Dokuchaev
Authors of the Publishing House "Arms and Technologies" continue to work on a unique encyclopedia in Russian and English (14 volumes are planned to be published). The encyclopedia describes modern weapon systems and defense technologies of leading companies of the Russian defense industry. One more volume has been issued. The volume is dedicated to rocket and artillery armament of ground forces. The encyclopedia is being published under general supervision of the Defense Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ivanov. Greeting the solid work beginning, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin noted that the military equipment presented in the book is a visible realization of labor and talent of our designers, engineers and workers proudly continuing glorious traditions of Russian armourers.
New book of the multi-volume Encyclopedia "Russia's Arms and Technologies. The XXI century Encyclopedia", Volume II, "Rocket and Artillery Armament of Ground Forces" - Moscow, Publishing House "Arms and Technologies", 2001, - contains 688 pages of textual and illustrative materials. It presents modern and prospective models of missiles and artillery armament for the Russian Land Force. It describes main activity directions, scientific, industrial, technological and export capabilities of largest companies and enterprises of the Russian defense industry manufacturing these types of weapons and military equipment. It should be noted that during local wars and military conflicts of last decades, the missile forces, artillery and aviation took 80 percent of total firing extent. In the Land Force the firing participation of missile forces and artillery can be as great as 50 - 70 percent of total extent of battle tasks a military formation is commissioned.
The editorial board of the volume includes chiefs of main and central directorates of the Ministry of Defense and General Staff. The board is headed by the Chief of the Armament Directorate of Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Aleksei Moskovsky. Due to this, the information contained in the book is absolutely trustworthy. Materials were prepared by leading specialists of defense enterprises. The reader has a possibility to be familiar with hundreds of weapon models described in 13 sections. The book presents complete information about field and tactical missile systems, antitank systems, ground artillery, control systems for missile forces and artillery, flame-throwers, firearms and grenade launchers, air missile systems and automated control systems for air defense, observation and sighting devices, computers for automated systems to control over forces, technical support facilities, and training facilities.
It is the first time when detailed information about many weapon models is provided, and it is a real present for professionals (specialists in modern missiles and artillery for ground forces, representatives of companies operating on the weapon market) and interesting people. For example, the high-accuracy missile system "Iskander-E" is designed for hitting enemy's firing facilities, command posts, communication centers, tactical aircraft at airports, air and missile defense objects, and other important small targets in the depth of a military formation. Colorful pages contain a detailed description, specifications of the system "Iskander", its conjugation with other weapon systems. The multi-channel mobile all-weather midrange air missile system "Ural", the anti-aircraft rocket and gun system "Sosna", the 125-mm self-propelled antitank gun 2S25, and many other models are among the novelties presented.
The Encyclopedia describes artillery systems designed many years ago, which did not enter service, but are still unique from technical point of view, according to the editors' opinion. These include, for example, the 420-mm self-propelled mortar of extreme power 2B1 "Oka" and the 406-mm self-propelled cannon of extreme power SM-54 "Kondensator-2P" designed in 50's for tactical nuclear weapon delivery.
"The distinctive peculiarity of the volume published" - says the Editor-in-Chief and the General Director of the Publishing House "Arms and Technologies" Nikolai Spassky, - "is a systematic approach in describing potential capabilities, and modernization essentials of certain models of missile and artillery weapons being in service in order to improve their specifications at minimal cost. The reader gets an encyclopedia oriented towards professional activities."
Analytical articles and the section "Industrial enterprises" confirm the conclusion made by Nikolai Spassky. Thus, the Vice Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov reflects upon the future of technical evolution and problems of the industrial policy. The Chief of the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate of the Defense Ministry Lieutenant General Nikolai Svertilov, Lieutenant General Nikolai Baranov, Major General Victor Khromov analyze the evolution of missile and artillery weapons during the last 50 years. Articles about enterprises and concerns of the Russian defense industry present distinctive peculiarities of weapons being manufactured and designed.
I can tell to people interesting with arms that only the section "Small Arms and Grenade Launchers" can beat any other publication due to the coverage of numerous infantry firearms and due to the presentation refinement. It contains descriptions of thirty Kalashnikov guns (submachine guns and machine guns by other designers are not counted); sniper firearms starting with Dragunov 7.62-mm self-loading sniper rifles SVD, SVDS, and SVDK; 21 Russian pistols (and in addition 30 sport and training pistols, revolvers, and submachine guns). Of course, the reader's attention will be attracted by special firearms (the 9-mm special silent system, the 5.66-mm submachine gun for underwater shooting APS, and others); shooting and grenade launching systems; anti-infantry grenade launchers; ring mount systems; and hand grenades.
The unquestionable advantage of this volume is that the Common Classifier of Supply Items for Russian Armed Forces, which is compatible with similar foreign classifiers by its parameters, is used there. And, of course, the high polygraphic quality of the book printed in Moscow should be marked. The publication has been already requested not only in Russia (by State agencies and bodies, defense enterprises), but also abroad by organizations, institutions and specialists paying close attention to Russian weapons. In general, the book content provides the most complete picture of missile and artillery weapons for the Russian Land Force at the last quarter of XX century and shows directions of improvement and evolution of these types of weapons and military equipment at the beginning of the new century.
Meanwhile the Publishing House "Arms and Technologies" continues its intensive work. The volume "Naval Weapons" will appear at the nearest time. Books about armored vehicles, military optics, and space missile systems. So, professionals and interesting people will face many discoveries.
